
A man that was wanted in connection to a homicide that occurred on I-85 in Mecklenburg County has turned himself in to authorities. According to Virginia State Police, on Wednesday at 6:02 pm, a senior special agent with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Appomattox Field Office was contacted by an acquaintance of Jason Allen Glidewell, II, and said that Glidewell wanted to turn himself in and was at the Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta.
Glidewell was then taken into custody without incident with the assistance of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Alberta Police Department, as well as troopers from the Virginia State Police Area 22 Office.
Glidewell is currently being held at the Meherrin River Regional Jail without bond on charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with a Aug. 28, 2025, fatal shooting along Interstate 85 northbound at the five-mile-marker in Mecklenburg County. Glidewell also faces unrelated outstanding misdemeanor charges out of Nottoway County.
Glidewell is scheduled to appear in Mecklenburg County General District Court Thursday (Sept. 4, 2025) morning.
The vehicle Glidewell was believed to be driving at the time of the shooting was located by Virginia State Police on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025.
At approximately 3:47 p.m., Thursday afternoon (Aug. 28, 2025), Virginia State Police was notified of a reported shooting that occurred along Interstate 85 northbound at the five-mile marker in Mecklenburg County. Troopers responding to the incident located a Honda Civic that had gone off the right side of the road and came to rest in a culvert.
The driver, Hunter A. Bates, 20, formerly of Colonial Heights, Va., was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was transported to an area hospital but was later released.
