Ahead of the Three Sisters Marathon races on Friday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 6, the Police Department is advising residents and visitors of street closures that will interrupt normal travel.

The event will feature a 5K race on Friday beginning at 916 West Main St. and half-marathon and marathon races on Saturday starting at 1060 West Main St. The marathon course will travel through multiple areas of the city before concluding at Ballou Park.

To ensure the safety of runners and spectators, temporary street closures will be in place, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday for the 5K and 6 a.m. on Saturday for the half-marathon and marathon. These closures will affect entire portions of multiple streets. Traffic control personnel will be stationed at every intersection along the course.

Fire Chief David Coffey emphasized that while the race will require temporary closures, emergency response will not be impacted.

“Although certain streets will be closed to the public during the races, there will be designated emergency crossways throughout the course,” said Coffey. “These will allow fire and medical crews to respond quickly to any emergencies that may occur.”

The Police Department also advises residents who may be “blocked in” along the marathon route:

  • If an emergency arises, and you need to leave your residence, police will have staffing available to escort you safely to the nearest crossover.
  • For assistance, call the Emergency Communications Center’s non-emergency number at 434-799-5111, option 8, and ask to speak with a Police supervisor assigned to the event.

No parking will be allowed on West Main Street and Main Street from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Retail stores will be open, with parking available on side streets.

Three Sisters Marathon officials encourage affected residents and visitors to park on side streets the evening prior to allow ease of exit, as no vehicular traffic will be permitted on the course.

Also on Saturday, Danville Transit will temporarily modify fixed-route bus service between 6 a.m. and 1:50 p.m. in support of the Three Sisters Marathon. During this period, fixed-route service will not operate on the #3 and #5 Edgewood–Stokesland Routes. In addition, segments of the #1 Kemper Road, #2 Riverside, and #3 Danville Estates Routes that travel along Memorial Drive, Holbrook Street, Cleveland Street, and South Main Street will also be suspended. To accommodate riders in affected areas, Danville Transit will provide door-to-door service by reservation. Passengers are required to schedule these trips in advance. All Handivan and Reserve A Ride trips provided during this timeframe will be charged at the fixed-route fare rate. For more information, call Danville Transit at 434-799-5144 or visit www.danvilletransit.com.
