Danville Public Schools held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday to unveil the new renovations at George Washington High School. The improvements have cost $88 million to date and were funded mostly by a 1% Sales Tax Referendum that was voted on by the City of Danville in 2021 and School Construction Program Assistance Grants.
The new facility is over 370,000 sq. ft. The renovations include a new gym with 2,500 seats, a new cafeteria, and renovations to the auditorium. Outside of the gym there are shadow boxes of former GW athletes that played in college or pro sports as well as new trophy cases.
The improvements also include renovations to the Vocational Education and Career Technology Classes that will include increased access to robotics and cyber security classes, a flight simulator, a nursing lab, culinary arts and hospitality space, and skilled trades courses.
Security at GW has also been improved as part of the project with a new security vestibule, cameras in every classroom that are monitored centrally, and classrooms that can be locked or unlocked remotely.
