
A man drowned in Pittsylvania County on Sunday. According to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 2:38 PM the Pittsylvania County 911 Center received a call from the 3000 Block of Gallows Road in Gretna. The caller reported a possible drowning near the Leesville Lake Dam.
The male victim was there with friends when he entered the lake and disappeared. Attempts were made by friends but could not locate him in the water.
First responders and personnel from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene and rescue divers entered the area where the individual was last seen. Divers continued their rescue attempts but soon turned from a rescue to a recovery mission.
Shortly before 7:00 pm on Sunday the victim was located by divers and pronounced deceased at the scene by rescue personnel. The body will be transported to the Medical Examiners office in Roanoke for an examination. The name of the victim is being withheld until confirmation of family can be confirmed.
