The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors approved awarding a contract to Classic City Mechanical at its July 15, 2025, business meeting to complete the Robin Court water line replacement project.
The amount of the contract is $973,045 and includes an alternate bid item for using ductile iron pipe, a more durable and detectable material, in lieu of PVC. The project will be mostly funded using a $900,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Health. Classic City Mechanical, based in Winterville, Georgia, has offices in Danville and Roanoke. The company completed the Horseshoe Road water infrastructure project for the County in 2023.
“This project has been four years in the making, and for the residents, a long time coming. I am pleased that the Board was able to move quickly on this contract and that construction will soon get underway. The residents of Robin Court deserve safe and clean drinking water,” said Robert Tucker, Chairman, Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors.
Robin Court is located in the Banister District.
In 2019 and 2020, the Robin Court water system exceeded acceptable levels for radium. Since then, radium levels have dropped below the maximum contaminant limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency. The water currently meets acceptable standards and is considered safe to drink.
In addition to radium, the water can appear discolored and that is due to two naturally occurring elements – iron and manganese. Levels exceeded the secondary maximum containment level in 2020 and 2023.
There are currently no known adverse health effects associated with the presence of iron and manganese at these levels, but they can result in aesthetic issues.
To provide relief to the residents of Robin Court, the Board in May voted to begin a bottled water distribution program for the 17 households connected to the community water system, as well as waive the bimonthly water fee for the Robin Court community, beginning with the July 15 bill cycle. Both the water distribution program and fee waiver will be ongoing until the project is complete.
The water line project will connect the Robin Court community to the Town of Chatham’s water system. This upgrade will not only address radium and water quality concerns but will also provide fire flow capabilities, which are currently unavailable in the area. Once construction begins, the project is expected to take about 180 days to complete
