City of Danville crews will be on alert overnight for possible flash flooding. In response to the threat of flash flooding from Tropical Storm Chantal, the City of Danville is taking precautionary measures to ensure public safety overnight.
A Public Works Department crew will be on duty throughout the night to monitor street conditions and close streets as needed. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg reports that Chantal could bring four to six inches of rain, with heavy rainfall rates at times that could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and cause flash flooding.
Motorists are urged to use caution, slow down, and remain alert while driving. Do not attempt to drive around cones, barricades, or other warning signs if streets are closed.
In addition, the Danville Fire Department will have extra personnel on duty and has placed its swift water rescue team on standby in the event of an emergency.
As of 8 pm Sunday, the National Weather Service reports that Chantal is tracking northward toward Danville. If it continues on this path, rainfall rates are expected to increase rapidly overnight as the storm band moves through the area.
