The annual Make Danville Shine Home Expo will be held on Saturday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Community Market located at 629 Craghead St. The event is free and open to the public.
Home repair and maintenance experts, along with a variety of other vendors, will be on-site to share helpful information, offer discounts, and hand out free giveaways while supplies last. Children of all ages can take part in craft projects and other fun activities. American Legion Post 1097 will begin serving free hot dogs at 8:30 a.m., and additional snacks will also be available.
New to this year’s event, an anti-litter campaign inspired by City Council will promote reducing litter and trash throughout the community. In support of this effort, more compact, eco-friendly giveaway items will be distributed to raise awareness about waste reduction. Children can also look forward to receiving Keeping Our Environment Clean coloring and activity books that teach the importance of caring for our environment.
“We are thrilled to be a part of Make Danville Shine again in 2025. This event highlights the resourcefulness and dedication of Danville citizens to continue improving their homes and our community spaces,” said Dana Kern, Housing and Redevelopment Specialist of the City of Danville’s Housing and Development office. “This fun-filled energetic event shows just how much Danvillians take pride in both their homes and our community as a whole.”
This year’s expo is co-sponsored once again with the Danville Neighborhood Development Corp. (DNDC).
“At DNDC, our goal is to work alongside residents to remove blight and create thriving and beautiful places where neighbors love where they live,” said Wendi Everson, DNDC executive director. “We are excited to partner with the City of Danville and its residents again this year to Make Danville Shine during the month of May.”

This expo will be held with the opening of the Farmers Market and officially kicks off the 13th annual Make Danville Shine campaign, which is a month-long initiative to encourage every resident to focus on maintenance, upkeep, and beautification of their property and to assist neighbors who may not be able to do so because of age or disability.
Citizens can take part in the cleanup campaign in five simple ways:
- Clean their house gutters.
- Paint their house’s exterior.
- Clear their property of weeds, vines, and overgrowth.
- Landscape their yards using flowers, mulch, and other materials.
- Set debris, appliances, and furniture at the curbside for city Public Works crews to pick up.
To support the cleanup campaign, the City of Danville Public Works Department is again waiving several fees and restrictions regarding yard waste, large bulk debris, tire disposal and appliance pickups during the month of May. The waiver of fees and restrictions, however, does not include tree stumps, debris generated by tree contractors, large bulk debris generated by contractors, and construction or demolition debris from contractors.
Also, the waiver of fees does not include the compost site.
No free rental trailers are available, but residents can place oversized piles of yard waste and large bulk debris at the residential curbside for collection by a bucket truck. Residents are asked to separate the yard waste from the large bulk debris. Loose leaves and grass clippings must be bagged. Collection will take place once a week on the regularly scheduled weekday.
Appliances and heavy debris will be collected on Fridays by appointment only.
By appointment, crews will collect large appliances for free and heavy debris such as bricks, rocks, cinder blocks and dirt. Heavy debris from contractors will not be collected free of charge.
The fee for tire disposal will be waived for residents but is limited to only four tires per household. Commercial tires are not included in the fee waiver.
All household trash and small debris should be inside an approved cart. Unapproved trash carts will not be emptied. All loose debris and household trash must be bagged. No car parts and hazardous materials such as liquids, paints, and fuel can be included.
The department has produced a flyer with the guidelines.
