In September, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin unveiled Virginia’s ALL In tutoring initiative, which defined high-intensity academic tutoring focused on supporting students who failed or demonstrated risk of failing their SOLs. Along with this announcement came a $418 investment by the Governor and General Assembly to address student learning loss.
Danville Public Schools (DPS) has designed its own ALL In tutoring plan, called “Take Off! With DPS.” Take
Off! With DPS has been developed to support the strategic plan and to meet the expectations of Virginia Department of Education’s ALL In Tutoring Initiative.
The tutoring plan is split into a four-pronged approach:
- Part One: Targeted Tutoring and Double Dosing or T2D2
T2D2, which started in October at school sites, aims to provide high-intensity after-school tutoring
and double-dosing opportunities during the school day for students in reading, mathematics, and
science. This tutoring takes place during the school day and after school and specifics vary by school
site. - Part Two: M.A.R.S. (Math and Reading Skills) Academy
This is a Saturday program set to start in January for targeted tutoring in grades 3-12. This program
is designed for students “at-risk” and “not proficient,” identified using growth and benchmark data. - Part Three: MAMBA Mentality: The March-April-May-Bigger-Achievement Program will provide personalized learning support using standardized assessment data in grades 3-8. This program is designed for “at-risk” and “not
proficient” students during the school day. - Part Four: Meaningful Engagement Saturday Program
Starting in January, this program ensures that students in grades K-12 with chronic absences receive
the support they need and have the opportunity to catch up academically. Students in Grades 3-12
will overlap with the MARS Academy.
The Take Off! With DPS ALL In tutoring plan provides the division with a detailed blueprint to tutoring to best
help students achieve academic success. The detailed plan can be viewed in full here. DPS is currently looking for qualified applications for the Saturday programs, set to start on January 20, 2024.
