DANVILLE, Va. – There’s been a shake-up at the top of the Danville Historical Society.
The group’s president, Mark Joyner, abruptly resigned Monday night following racist posts that appeared on his Facebook account this past weekend.
The Danville Historical Society deemed the remarks “repugnant” and Joyner offered his resignation following an emergency meeting of the group’s board of directors.
The post uses a racial slur in reference to a Black man depicted in the Heroes of War Statue in Richmond, which was placed in response to Confederate monuments on display for more than a century.
Joyner denied being the source of the posts and said they were made by a friend who had access to his Facebook account. He said he plans to take legal action against the unnamed individual.
