DANVILLE, Va. – A smoke detector installed by the Danville fire department is credited with saving a local man’s life.

Danville firefighters were called to the Danville Mobile Home Court just before 3 a.m. Monday after Jack Sink was awakened by a smoke detector and spotted fire around the floor duct of the furnace. He called 911 and firefighters responded, crawling under the trailer, where they found the floor around the furnace ablaze. The power was disconnected and the unit was removed. The fire was doused quickly and crews vented smoke from the trailer.

Sink is a veteran and stayed at his American Legion post while repairs were made. He wasn’t injured in the fire.

The Danville Fire Department responded with three engines and a ladder truck. Crews were on scene for just over an hour.
