DANVILLE, Va. – National Weather Service meteorologist Will Perry says we can expect flooding to continue in the Danville area for “at least the next 24 hours.” A flood warning remained in effect for the entire region Friday morning.
Danville Police report several flood-prone roads remain closed due to high waters Friday morning. These include the “S” curves along River Street headed out Rt. 58; Memorial Drive and Primrose Place, where a mudslide occurred Thursday morning; Goodyear Boulevard at Pumpkin Creek; Water Street at Halifax Road; and Trade Street behind Chick-fil-A on Riverside Drive.
The Dan River rose about ten feet in five hours Thursday and is expected to crest at 26.8 feet Friday morning. The river had risen to about 26 feet by 2 a.m. Friday, which Perry describes as “moderate” flood stage.
Perry notes that flooding was “pretty much countywide” in Pittsylvania, with the heaviest rain falling in the southern end of the county. He says rain totals in Pittsylvania County ranged from two-to-four inches in a 12-hour period, with some areas receiving even more. Dozens of roads were closed Thursday night as a result of flooding.
If the Dan River crests at 26.8 feet, Perry said that would be “the fifth highest” level on record.
