WENTWORTH, N.C. – Rockingham County has joined a growing list of Tar Heel localities to become a Second Amendment Sanctuary.

It was standing room only, as more than 200 people packed the Board of Commissioner’s meeting to express their opposition to any gun-control measures.

The vote is in response to legislation in neighboring Virginia. Rockingham County residents fear that North Carolina may follow suit, even though Republicans control the state legislature in Raleigh.

The newly-elected Democratic majority in Virginia has made gun control a central issue in this year’s legislative session.

To date, nine North Carolina counties have declared themselves Second Amendment Sanctuaries in an attempt to avoid similar restrictions.

If North Carolina passes gun restrictions, the counties would still be required to obey the law.
