STUART, Va. – An 18-year-old has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a Martinsville man outside a church.
According to the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, Lonnie Reynolds has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, and reckless handling of a firearm. Reynolds is being held without bail in the Patrick County jail.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the parking lot of the True Gospel Baptist Church on the Salem Highway in Stuart around 8 p.m. Sunday and found 27-year-old Damien Hairston dead of apparent gunshot wounds.
Hairston was murdered after meeting another group of individuals in the parking lot.
Investigators say the church was not meeting at the time and the group is not affiliated with True Gospel.
The Patrick County Sheriff’s Department says the investigation into Hairston’s death is continuing.
