BEDFORD, Va. – Investigators say the fire that destroyed the historic Bedford Middle School building early Thursday was set intentionally. Now, they are looking for the person responsible.

Bedford Police have released surveillance photos of the man they believe started the fire, which burned for about an hour before the first call was received. Surveillance cameras were positioned inside and outside the building on Longwood Avenue and authorities are reviewing all of the cameras that survived the inferno.

Flames were visible from the second story windows when the first units arrived and were soon shooting through the roof of the mammoth brick building. The fire spread quickly, causing several roofs to collapse, forcing crews outside of the building. The fire rekindled Thursday night.

Firefighters were on scene for about 24 hours and pumped more than 100,000 gallons of water onto the conflagration.
