DANVILLE, Va. – A lockdown on the main campus of Averett University was lifted early Sunday morning after police determined there was no threat.
The school was placed under lockdown after Campus Safety and Security received a report from a campus app of a person on the grounds with a firearm. The person was on Woodland Drive, which is in the center of campus. No weapon was found and the lockdown was lifted two-and-a-half hours later.
Danville Police and Averett officials say that it appears “there was never a firearm involved in this incident.” A joint news release says “the rumors on social media of shots being fired or related posts were false.”
Danville Police arrived on the scene immediately and began investigating and working with administrators and campus security officials.
The person responsible for the rumor has been identified but no criminal charges will be filed.
