DANVILLE, VA — A family of six is being helped by the Red Cross after fire forced them from their north Danville home Saturday night.

Danville fire crews were able to douse the flames quickly but the smoke and flames did a significant amount of damage to their two-story home at 202 East Thomas Street.

Trucks responded shortly before midnight. No flames were visible from the exterior but  they saw the fire through a window after walking around the house.

The fire was on a stove and was confined to the kitchen but there was significant smoke damage at about $5,000.

No one was inside the house at the time and there were no injuries.

The Danville Fire Department reminds residents that fires caused by unattended cooking are the number one cause of residential fires every year.
