(Pittsylvania County, Va.) — Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor has identified the couple found dead in their Axton home early Monday morning as 29-year-old Britany Denise Cioffa and her husband, 38-year-old Thomas Richard Cioffa.

Investigators were called to their home in the 17000 block of Callands Road about 1 a.m. Monday for a well being check. They received no answer to a knock on the front door so deputies forced their way inside. The couple was found dead with a gun nearby. Investigators believe the Cioffas were alone in the home at the time of their deaths,

Sheriff Taylor said he is still awaiting autopsy results from the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke.
