(Ridgeway, Va.) — A 75-year-old man has been charged with murder in Henry County following a shooting in a convenience store parking lot.

The shooting was reported about 10:15 Thursday morning at BG’s Express on Philpott Highway near Ridgeway.

The victim, 55-year-old Mack Bradley Watkins of Patrick County, died of a gunshot wound to the chest in what investigators say was the outgrowth of a domestic incident. Matthews reportedly had a woman with him when the incident occurred. Crews attempted CPR, but Watkins died at the scene.

75-year-old William Matthews was identified as the shooter and witnesses gave investigators a description of the vehicle he was driving. About 90 minutes later, Virginia State Police saw a vehicle matching the description headed west on A. L. Philpott Highway. Troopers and Henry County deputies pulled the vehicle over and took Matthews into custody.

Matthews is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He is currently held in the Henry County Jail without bond.
