(Chatham, Va.) — 19-year-old Phillip Michael Giles has been sentenced to just under 40 years for the murder of Demetrius Brown.

Pittsylvania County Circuit Court Judge Stacey Moreau sentenced Brown Tuesday for the April 5, 2017 shooting death in Blairs.

A Chatham jury convicted Giles in January but sentencing was left up to the judge since Brown was 16 at the time of the homicide.

Testimony showed that Brown met Giles on Kadesh Court to buy some marijuana. A witness heard Brown begging for his life as Giles fired a single shot at his face. Giles drove his mother’s car to sell the marijuana and then fled to South Carolina. He was arrested by police there following a brief foot chase.

The prosecutor described the murder as deliberate and premeditated.

The judge sentenced Giles to 39 years and seven months in prison.
