(Franklin County, Va.) — The National Weather Service confirms that 18 tornadoes touched down in Virginia and North Carolina during the severe storms on Friday, including one that caused widespread damage to homes and property in Franklin County.
The National Weather Service says that was a powerful EF3 tornado that touched down in Franklin County, with wind speeds of 159 mph. An EF3 Tornado is ranked 136 to 200 mph, making the tornado nearly an EF4. The tornado touched down Friday morning at 10:25 just to the north of Oak Level in Franklin County. It moved northeast, destroying ten buildings. There were no reports of injuries. An EF1 tornado was also confirmed in Bedford County, with wind speeds up to 93 mph.
A Tornado Warning was issued for Danville and Pittsylvania County during the height of the storm, but little damage was reported locally.
28 tornadoes have been confirmed in the two states and that number is expected to continue to rise as weather spotters conduct additional surveys early this week.
According to the National Weather Service’s office in Wakefield, tornadoes have been confirmed in Franklin County, Bedford County, Emporia, Greensville County, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County., Gaston, and Sussex County. The other tornadoes confirmed across the states were in Brunswick, Northampton County, N.C., Louisa County, Prince George County, Fairfax County, Lincoln, N.C., Chatham, N.C., and Alexander, N.C.
The National Weather Service in Wakefield is in the process of surveying the area for any signs of possible tornadoes.
