(Martinsville, Va.) — A Martinsville woman convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of her boyfriend will be released on the 12 months she has already served, provided she stays out of trouble with the law.
The Martinsville Bulletin reports that 32-year-old Katelia S. Beal was sentenced Thursday in Martinsville Circuit Court to the year in jail the jury had recommended previously in the March 17, 2018 death of Michael Antonio Lightfoot. The judge ordered that she pay funeral costs and placed Beal on 12 months of post-release supervised probation and ordered that she be on good behavior for 5 years.
Beal claimed she was acting in self-defense and said a drunken Lightfoot had assaulted her and became increasingly more aggressive.
Lightfoot, 29, died of a knife wound to the heart.
