(Chatham, Va.) — Zackary Brandon Long entered guilty pleas to murder and firearms charges in a Pittsylvania County courtroom Wednesday. Long, 23, was charged with the 2018 murder of his father, 41-year-old David Christopher “Chris” Long.
On July 6, 2018, Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 898 Neal Davis Road after receiving a report of a shooting. They found Chris Long in a pool of blood in the hallway. He’d been shot twice at close range with a shotgun after a struggle with his son.
Michael Hatt was in the home at the time and began CPR and applied a tourniquet to Chris Long. Prosecutors say Zackary Long returned with a handgun and fired two more shots from a .44 caliber revolver. His father died a short time later of gunshot wounds to torso and shotgun wounds to his torso and arm.
Zackary Long will be sentenced July 8 in Pittsylvania County Circuit Court. He faces a possible sentence of 27 years to life plus 25 years in prison.
