(Chatham, Va.) — A road rage incident that left a man dead has resulted in a murder indictment in Pittsylvania County.
James Rowland Hooper, III has been indicted for first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Jacob Steele Robertson of Lynchburg. Hooper is 46 and is also from Lynchburg. He is charged in the January 8 shooting at the Kangaroo gas station on U.S. 29 in Blairs.
Hooper and Robertson were both southbound in separate cars when Hooper claims that Robertson ran him off of the road. Both drivers pulled into the parking lot of the Kangaroo station and the vehicles were side-by-side when Hooper got out of his car and fired two shots. Both struck Robertson, who died of a bullet wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by rescue personnel.
In addition to murder, Hooper is charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
