(Danville, Va.) – Danville City Manager Ken Larking has outlined a proposed 2020 budget that includes a 10-cent personal property tax hike and an 8-cent increase in the real estate tax. He is also looking at adding a 30-cent tax on each pack of cigarettes to increase funding for public schools and the Danville Lifesaving Crew.
The proposed budget would add an additional $2.3 million for public schools and earmark $280,000 to the Danville Life Saving Crew. The DLSC currently receives $80,000 from the city annually. The additional money for schools would be used to increase teacher pay.
The proposals are preliminary and subject to approval by Danville City Council.
A 2020 budget must be adopted before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.
