(Danville, Va.) — For the first time in more than 20 years, the Eagles of George Washington are state champions in basketball.
The Eagles hit the court strong at the Siegel Center on the VCU campus Thursday night and never looked back, trailing at just one point in the game and then by a single point for less than a minute near the end of the third quarter. They went on the beat Louisa County by a score of 55-44.
The Eagles scored the first seven point of the game.
Senior Shunta Wilson, all state guard, led all scorers with 29 points. Ny’rek Wheeler had 14 points and 16 rebounds and knocked down 8-of-11 free throws to propel the Eagles to the big win.
Head Coach Jermaine Parker’s dream of a state championship became reality after just two years on the job with what WBTM Sports Director Austin Bunn describes as a “prepared and focused team,” adding: “You could tell when G.W. took the court that they were there to win, and they did.”
Jubilant fans greeted their bus as the team returned home late Thursday night to celebrate their fourth ever state championship.
The Eagles finish their 2019 season with a state title and a 27-2 record.
