(Danville, VA) – The Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority took another step towards a newer larger facility Tuesday.  Danville City Council unanimously approved a special use permit for the site located west of Danville Community College at Chatham Avenue.

The $1.5 million project would produce a facility more than six times the size of the 1,100 sq. ft facility that is the current community center on Bonner Avenue.   Federal funding will cover just under half of the site’s construction and the DRHA will begin looking towards community foundations along with appealing to the City of Danville for additional assistance.

The new community center would have a computer lab, a commercial kitchen and would serve as host venue for other life building activities like tutoring and team sports for both youth and adults.  The Executive director of the DRHA Gary Wasson added, “Some of the city’s youth and gang task force activities may be also able to use the building space.”
