(Danville, VA) The Danville Fire Department was called to the 400 block of Harrison Street Monday afternoon for reports of a fire in an apartment. Upon arrival crews found one of the two apartments fully involved.
One female tenant was able to make it out but suffered second degree burns to her hands and face. She was transported to the Sovah Health Danville for treatment. She also alerted fire crews to her dog still being trapped inside the home. Crews were able to reach the animal inside attempts to resuscitate the pet were unsuccessful.
Assistant Fire Marshall Richard Guill said the fire was started by the woman falling asleep while smoking and the burns she endured were due to the couch catching fire.
