(Chatham, Va.) – Virginia State Police have identified the driver who was behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer truck that crashed into a Chatham church Tuesday night.

65-year-old Herman L. Wicker, Jr. of Altoona, Pa. was going north on Route 29 when he ran off the left side of the road and through the median crossing the southbound lanes. The big rig struck three parked vehicles before taking out part of a canopy and slamming into a wall in the front of the Open Bible Church. The sanctuary was untouched but the building inspector is still assessing damage to the building.

He was driving a semi-truck for Sheetz and the company said in a statement Wednesday that there had been no prior problems with Wicker, who was charged with reckless driving. He was freed from the wreckage and remains hospitalized.
