(Chatham, Va.) — A 19-year-old charged with shooting another teenager in Blairs was convicted of murder at the conclusion of his three-day jury trial in Chatham.

Phillip Michael Giles was charged with first-degree murder in shooting death of 18-year-old Demetrius Lee Brown.

Brown was found dead in the street outside of his Kadesh Court home by his father and stepmother on the evening of April 5, 2017. He died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

Brown’s father provided video footage from a home surveillance system, which showed a white Cadillac driving down Kadesh Court then turning around and stopping.

Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office investigators used Brown’s cell phone to find out who he communicated with before he was killed.

Giles’ fled to Colleton County, South Carolina, where police arrested him after a car and foot chase. Police found a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson while taking Giles into custody.

He was a juvenile at the time of the offense and will be sentenced at a later date.
