(Danville, Va.) — Danville may have dodged a bullet, but other areas of the state weren’t as fortunate. A winter storm sweeping in from the Midwest has punished the mid-Atlantic region for a second day Sunday, knocking out power to thousands with a mix of snow, sleet and ice that cancelled flights, toppled trees and caused hundreds of road accidents.

More than 200,000 people in Virginia and North Carolina were without power Sunday and airports in the region also were hampered by the storm. There were several hundred outages in Danville, including areas of Mount Hermon, Blairs, Laurel Grove and Dry Fork. Most customers were back on line last night, although crews continued to work this morning to restore scattered outages.

Parts of central Illinois have registered record snowfalls after a winter storm struck and then lingered for much of the weekend. Springfield’s State Journal-Register reports that the state capital broke a 55-year record for daily snowfall on Saturday.
