(Pittsylvania County, Va.) – 27-year-old De’Von Dre’Col Smith of Martinsville is charged with murder following a shooting in Pittsylvania County on Sunday.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the 2500 block of Martin Drive in Axton just after 4 pm. On arrival, they found they found 23-year-old Deon Jawan Peatross of Eden, North Carolina dead.

Smith is charged with first degree murder and using a firearm to commit a felony.

Peatross’ body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

Smith is currently being held in the Pittsylvania County Jail without bond. He will appear in court Monday, Jan. 7.

The investigation into this case is continuing.
