(Danville, Va.) – Danville will likely see a snow and ice mixture this weekend. The big question now is whether there will be a significant accumulation locally.

The National Weather Service says the first major snowstorm of the season could bring significant accumulations to the region late Saturday. But the system moving here from the West Coast has slowed and the heaviest snowfall in Southside Virginia isn’t expected until Sunday. Current models have the area getting snow late Saturday night and Sunday morning, then a mixture of snow and rain Sunday afternoon before changing back to snow Sunday night. A rain and snow mixture is likely on Monday, with temperatures holding in the 30s.

Forecasters say they will have a better idea of what to expect over the next 24 hours but they caution that this is shaping up to be a long duration winter weather event that could last for a couple of days, delivering heavy accumulations of snow.
