(Charlottesville, Va.) — Carl Ray Kennedy has been indicted in federal court on charges of kidnapping his 7-month-old daughter from the parking lot of a Danville convenience store on June 3.

Kennedy, of Randleman, North Carolina, was indicted by a grand jury on one count of traveling from North Carolina to Virginia with the intent to violate a protective order issued the previous month by a Pittsylvania County judge. The order prohibited any contact between Kennedy and his daughter, Emma Grace Kennedy, except through emails.

Virginia State Police issued an Amber Alert after the girl was snatched from her mother’s arms outside a gas station in Danville. Kennedy was arrested two days later in North Carolina after he asked a woman where he could buy some diapers for the young girl.

The 51-year-old Kennedy was returned to Virginia, where he was charged with domestic assault and abduction.
