(Pittsylvania County, Va.) – Murder and firearms charges against 43-year-old Jason Scott Rigney have been certified to a grand jury.
The Danville man is accused of killing his former girlfriend, 30-year-old Heather Matherly, at a home on Grays Park Road on September 23. The charges were forwarded to the grand jury following a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Pittsylvania County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Rigney’s sister, Roxanne Rigney, testified that her brother confessed to killing Matherly using their father’s gun. Rigney said her brother told her he could commit suicide, run, or rush police as they closed in on him.
Matherly’s body was found by deputies on the floor of a back bedroom in her Brosville home. She suffered gunshot wounds on her left shoulder, her neck and the corner of her right eye.
Jason Scott Rigney was arrested without incident at the Economy Inn in Danville and was jailed without bond.
