(Danville, Va.) – Danville residents awoke Sunday to a light rain as thousands of homes remain without power in and around the city.
That number had been reduced from 20,000 Thursday afternoon to about 2,000 by nightfall Saturday , with more homes and businesses placed back in service by the hour.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg said that the city experienced record-setting rainfall during Thursday’s storms. More than six inches of rain fell that day, eclipsing the old mark of 5.81 inches set on August 27, 2008. Winds also topped 70 mph and Michael spawned a likely tornado that toppled trees and damaged or destroyed homes in the Old West End, the Forest Hills subdivision, and around Howeland Circle, Virginia Avenue and Watson St./Avondale Dr.
Parts of South Boston and the flood-prone 501 and 58 intersection were under water. Businesses in Riverdale were hit especially hard. U.S. 501 and 58 were temporarily closed in South Boston for the second time in a month.
The Dan River reached a record crest above 30 feet in Danville before starting to recede late Saturday afternoon. Levels were slightly higher in South Boston.
