(Richmond, Va.) — More than 440 schools across the Commonwealth will share $6 million for security upgrades. Gov. Ralph Northam announced the grants this week.

The money will be used to install security cameras, metal detectors, locks and other security features at 100 school divisions across Virginia.

Danville and Pittsylvania County will each get about $100,000. The money will be used by Danville Public Schools for beefed up security at Forest Hills, Park Avenue and Schoolfield Elementary Schools. Pittsylvania County is getting almost $100,000 for improvements at elementary, middle and high schools across the county.

The state’s school security grant program was created in 2013 and has funded nearly 3,000 new projects and system upgrades. The program prioritizes schools lacking modern security equipment, schools with high numbers of offenses, and schools lacking funds to pay for upgrades.
