(Danville, Va.) – A Pittsylvania County woman who admitted to drowning her newborn baby and hiding the body for nearly three years is headed to prison.
Vanessa Poteat pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder and was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in prison.
Prosecutors say she hid her pregnancy in 2013, gave birth to her son in a bathtub, and then drowned the infant. The body was found hidden in a duffel bag in the closet of a Danville home three years later.
Poteat had planned to withdraw her guilty plea and proceed with a trial Thursday but changed her mind after consulting with her attorney.
The judge sentenced her to 20 years in prison, with six years suspended.
