(South Boston, Va.) – Rising waters forced officials to close the flood-prone Riversdale area Wednesday as a flood warning for South Boston continues through Thursday night.
Flooding extended from the Tucker Watkins Bridge to the 58/501 intersection Wednesday afternoon. All lanes were covered in water, which was creeping into buildings in the business district.
A used car dealership was shuttling vehicles to higher ground as the floodwaters continued to rise Wednesday.
The National Weather Service expects the Dan River to crest at just over 27 feet, about eight feet above flood stage of 19 feet. The river is expected to drop below flood stage Thursday afternoon.
This crest is comparable to a previous highwater mark of 27.5 feet on Nov. 14, 2009.
