(Lynchburg, Va.) – An evacuation order for parts of Lynchburg was lifted Saturday afternoon and residents spent the weekend cleaning up homes and basements following flash flooding on Thursday.

Heavy rains sent water spilling over a dam, spurring fears that it could collapse. About 124 homes downstream of College Lake Dam were evacuated. That order was lifted at 12:45 Saturday afternoon; however, engineers will continue to monitor the dam and spillway. Officials say the 84-year old earthen dam is currently “stable.”

Crews began draining water from the lake Saturday to facilitate repairs to the dam.

Lakeside Drive remains closed to traffic in the area surrounding the lake.

Meanwhile, a water main break in downtown Lynchburg caused more problems Sunday. The break is downtown on Commerce Street between 8th Street and 9th Streets and Lynchburg officials have closed the block until further notice.

The Department of water resources has yet to determine the cause of the break.
