(Martinsville, Va.) – A Martinsville apartment building was destroyed by fire Saturday night, but all of the residents were able to get out safely.

Firefighters were called to the Piedmont Community Services apartment complex on East Church Street about 8 p.m. The first units found heavy smoke and flames in the building. They were able to bring the fire under control but the building was a total loss.

All of the occupants were out of the building when firefighters arrived; however, several were treated for minor injuries.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

The complex served as home for residents seeking housing as a result of substance abuse problems, disabilities or mental health issues.
