(Danville, Va.) — The Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber is one of 21 local and regional chambers of commerce publicly supporting expanded health care coverage for uninsured Virginians.
The organizations say Virginia should pursue federal funding available through the Affordable Care Act and say failure to do so has already cost the state more than $10.5 billion in lost revenue.
The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association says expansion would provide coverage to 300,000 uninsured Virginians, while returning taxpayer dollars to the state, improving public health, supporting jobs and strengthening the economy.
According to research by Chmura Economics, the economic impact from expanded coverage in Virginia would average $3.5 billion and 26,500 jobs from 2015-2020. Virginia’s own estimates project about $100 million in net savings through the state’s 2022 fiscal year.
To date, 32 states and D.C. have expanded health care access.
