(Danville, Va.) – Sears, one of the anchor stores in the Danville Mall, will close this summer.
The company confirmed Thursday that the store on Piedmont Drive will cease operations in August, with the automotive division closing its doors in June. Sears owns the building in the mall, which has been in operation since the former Piedmont Mall held its grand opening in 1984. Sears previously operated Danville stores at locations on Main and Ridge Streets.
Sears owns Kmart and both operations have been losing billions of dollars and closing stores for years. Their parent company, Sears Holdings, hasn’t turned a profit since 2010 and warned last year there was “substantial doubt” that it would be able to stay in business. The Danville Kmart store closed in January.
By the end of last July, Sears Holdings had only 1,250 stores left in the United States, down from 3,400 at the start of 2006.
Sears earlier announced plans to close than 100 stores by April and last month released a list of 25 more stores it planned to shutter, although the Danville store wasn’t on either list.
