(Danville, Va.) — Danville Utilities is responding to reports of widespread power outages due to high winds and downed trees. The outages are scattered throughout the service area. Within city limits, the outages include Cardinal Village, Schoolfield, Edgewood and Windsor Heights.

In addition, a car accident on South Boston Road has left about 500 customers without power in the airport area, including the Cyber Park and Kentuck Road from South Boston Road to the Ringgold Industrial Park. That outage has since been repaired.

West Main Street at Bishop Avenue was closed to through traffic after a downed tree took out three utility poles.

Danville and Pittsylvania County are among the localities under a high wind warning through 11 a.m. Saturday. Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected through the day. Customers who experience a power outage are asked to alert Danville Utilities by calling its 24-hour emergency number at (434) 773-8300.

The high wind warning from the National Weather Service took effect at midnight. Reports of power outages began around 1 a.m., with a major outage in the Cascade area that occurred when a tree fell over a line. 613 customers were left in the dark. Service to those customers was restored at 8 a.m.

In addition to utility line crews, Public Works tree crews were called out overnight, beginning at 1:45 a.m. after receiving reports of five large trees down. All five trees were blocking streets. The streets were Bishop Avenue, Memorial Drive, Riverside Drive, Bonner Avenue and Booth Street. All but the tree at Bishop and West Main Street have been removed. Crews are working on removing that tree.
