(Danville, Va.) – Danville Police believe a Sunday morning shooting death was gang-related, but are saying little about the homicide investigation.

Police said Monday that it appears the death of 16-year-old Nitaya Adams was the outgrowth of gang activity and that she was not the intended target of the shooter.

At this time, no one has been arrested or charged in the shooting death.

Adams was with a large group of individuals on Paxton Street when she was shot and killed early Sunday morning. Police were called to the 700 block of Paxton about 3 a.m., but Adams had already been taken to the emergency room by private vehicle. She died a short time later.

Adams would have started her senior year at George Washington High School on Wednesday.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
