So Discovery Channel kicked off Shark Week 2017 by having Michael Phelps take on a Great White Shark in a race…well, sort of.

So for months they’ve built this event up to make us all believe that we’d see Michael and real-life, heavy, “I can eat boats” shark side by side, battling for first place in a race to the finish. Alas, this was not the case.

The whole thing was simulated. Discovery Channel timed some sharks and then took that data and had Phelps racing beside a computer-animated shark (of course they post that in post-production).

On the up-side, Phelps did race in the ocean and it’s pretty impressive that (even though it was simulated) he can give a shark a run for its money!
