(Martinsville, Va.) – Martinsville firefighters spent nine hours at the scene of a New Year’s Eve house fire.

Fire and EMS personnel responded to the large, brick home in the 1200 block of Mulberry Road at around 6:30 Monday night.

The two homeowners spotted smoke and flames coming from the attic of the house and got out safely, along with their five dogs. Firefighters located both cats while battling the blaze and were able to get them out safely.

They began fighting the fire from outside the home and later moved inside the structure before a portion of the building collapsed. No one was injured.

The Martinsville fire marshal is investigating the cause.
