(Danville, Va.) — The clean-up continues at George Washington High School and at the Langston Focus School. GW’s doors remained shuttered for a week after Tropical Storm Michael left the basement under 8 feet of water, submerging one of the high-school’s power vaults, the device that routes power from the city’s electrical grid throughout the school.

While electric crews brought the schools up to speed, Superintendent Dr. Stanley Jones says they’ll be unable to use the auditoriums for the remainder of the calendar year. Jones points to “severe damage” to the HVAC units and the electrical systems at both schools and  says he doesn’t expect the problems to be corrected before January of 2019.

Large sections of Langston’s foam roof “blew off” during the storm, and power was cut to parts of the building.
