(Pittsylvania County, Va.) – A teenage driver has been charged in an accident that resulted in the death of a Tunstall high school senior who was just a week away from graduation.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says 17-year-old Colby Payne had a blood-alcohol content of .06 and has been charged with driving while intoxicated on a provisional license.

18-year-old Brandi Beckelheimer was killed in the accident. Police say she was in an SUV with four other teens driving home from Hyco Lake in Semora, North Carolina around 8:30 on the night of May 20. Investigators said she was hanging out of the front passenger window when she fell onto the pavement.

All of the teens in the SUV were either 17 or 18 years old, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Authorities do not believe all four teens in the SUV had been drinking.

Since the alcohol was purchased in Virginia, the investigation is now being handled by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.
