(Pittsylvania County, Va.) – A Sutherlin woman was killed Monday evening when her car rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Rt. 729 in Pittsylvania County.

Virginia State Police say the crash happened just before 7 p.m. when a northbound Chevy Aveo slammed into the rear of an 18-wheeler. The truck was experiencing mechanical problems.

The driver has been identified as 31-year-old Rachel F. Gatewood of Sutherlin, Va. Gatewood was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation.
