(Greensboro, N.C.) – Tragedy struck a family from the Congo who came here for a better life. Authorities say five of their children died in a weekend apartment fire in Greensboro.

Two of the children died Saturday and the other three died Sunday after being taken off life support at Brenner Children’s hospital.

The fire was reported at 4 a.m. Saturday in an apartment complex at 3100 Summit Avenue near Cone Boulevard.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and the children’s names have not been released. Neighbors said all five of the children were under the age of eight.

The victims were a refugee family who came to the area in 2016 from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

One adult was also injured in the fire, but was released following treatment at a Greensboro hospital.
